You may have heard on tonight's news, or on the radio during the day, as I did, that Mollie Sudgen has died today, or in UK time, after an illness. I
actually heard it on the 9am news. She was 86yrs. You'll remember she played Mrs Slocombe in 'Are You Being Served'. (I thought it was
'Sugdon' but checked it on Google, but I think it's pronounced like that)
That's three of the main ones gone now, with Wendy Richards (Miss Brahams) dying from cancer early this year I think it was. Of course, John Inman died a few years ago, and as I thought when I just checked the cast list, the one who played the original Mr Granger is deceased. Also the one who played the ' young' Mr. Grace, and Arthur English who played the storeman in the light beige coat.
She was a good actor, very funny too. I expect her husband died before her - he wasn't famous at all. She was also in a British sit-com called, 'The Liver Birds' about two Liverpool girls rentng together. She played the Mother of the more 'up-market' girl, as the other girl was more 'common,' but the other one wasn't snobbie at all. She wasn't in every episode, only when she visited. She played the 'snobbie' Mother to a T of course - you can just imagine it!
Her 'daughter' in the series was called, Sandra, and the Mother always referred to her as , 'My S..a..r..n..dra' and looked down her nose at the other 'common' girl, who was actually quite nice in personality, a blonde one. It was quite funny once in the show, when Sandra told her Mother that the other girl was going in for a beauty contest at the factory where she worked, trying to impress her Mother about the girl, but her Mum just remarked, 'Oh, that's not a beauty contest - more a 'Scrubber Of The Year' contest! (looking down her nose in that sneering way that only she could do!) Now, if my S..a..r..n..dra was going in for a beauty contest..........etc' addressing the girl.
She was also in an episode of Coronation St.
They also announced Karl Maldon has died at the age of 97yrs. I liked him in 'The Streets Of San Fran Cisco' with Michael Douglas in his younger days. (they pronouced his surname as 'Moldon' which was news to me)
