I don't know whether you've been to see this yet, just to compare with the series maybe, but I went to see it a few weeks ago shortly after it came
out, but have only just got around to putting it on.
I think it's a good thriller as a film on its own if you haven't seen the series. It's only loosely based on the series anyway, I think, as they seemed to have made their own story up for the rest. With it only being about 2hrs, as against 6hrs for the series, they had to cut some things out, and just refer to them if they were essential to the story. They cut out the affair that Cal had (John Simm in the series, Russell Crowe in the film) but made reference to it, and you saw Steven's wife a couple of times, but she didn't really have a big part, and I've never seen the actor before.
The plot changes are a bit hazy now, with it being so long ago, but I just remembered that the girlfriend of the boy who got shot that brought the case to Cal, well, it didn't show that, but they said that she had got shot by the hit-man, presumably because he'd found out about her.
I dozed off for a bit of it, but not because it wasn't good, but I found it a bit confusing, probably because I was comparing the story and characters to the series. It's quite an exciting film if you haven't seen the series or know about it. I've read some reviews of people who have seen it and say they enjoyed it.
The acting is good ,and Russell Crowe and Helen Mirren are good in it. I think it was Ben Afflick who was playing Steven's part, and Helen Mirren was playing Bill Nighy's part. The son of the manager wasn't in it for that reason. I read that they had cut Della's part out ie: the jounalist played by Kellie MacDonald, but she was in it.
It's worth seeing, if only out of curiosity to the series, but I'd take the series anytime, and I'd rather look at John Simm anyway than Russell!
Russell's OK, but not my type really. Good actor, though.
I don't know why they say he's playing a 'hippie-type' character, because Cal wasn't in the series. For this reason he looked a bit slobby
in the film and it was said that he put weight on for the part and grew his hair etc. It's disappeared out of the Top 10, so maybe a bit hard to find -
might have to wait for it on TV if you don't catch it at the cinema.
